ARCITEKBio Ltd (ABL) is a clean-tech spin out company from Aberystwyth University (AU), incorporated in Nov 2018. We have a low-cost sustainable and IP-protected bio-manufacturing process (EcoXyL) for producing xylitol from agricultural and industrial by-products. Our process delivers a sustainable means of production of xylitol using by-product streams including straw, brewer’s maltose and bagasse. The by-products can comes from a variety of sectors such as farming, forestry, brewing, sugar and paper/pulp from which ABL valorises the by-product stream to produce xylitol; a high value chemical. Xylitol is a natural sweetener and sugar alternative with wide-ranging existing applications within dental, dietary and diabetic products. It is a low-calorie sugar substitute (like-for-like sweetness to table sugar with 40% fewer calories) offering dental/oral benefits and obesity reduction with a predicted current annual market of ~$1.0 billion.
